Depending on what I am reading, I find that I use different strategies to help me understand. It doesn't really matter if it has a fancy, professional academic name. Or even if I am calling the strategy that right thing; the most important thing is that I use it again and again and that it works. I always have a hard time remembering characters in a story. Before I know what a character map was, I was drawing that out with every novel that I read. It helped me to keep track of who was who and what their personality was like. Tell me about a reading strategy that you use and explain how it works.

I received a funny email this week from one of my friends (a math teacher.) The email talked about how ridiculous the English language is. It is often that we have a wordin English that has a different pronunciation or an entirely different menaning even though it sounds exactly the same. Consider this sentence: I read about the book I read last year and it makes my face red. I know, right?!?! Tell me about a word that your have read before that you didn't understand and where you read it :)
Students often say they don't like to read because there are no books written about topics that they like. I wish someone would write a book about..... because
This time of year is often very difficult for families to make time to read. I know that even my own reading gets pushed aside or my storytime with my son gets cut short because there is so much to do. I am tryign to create lots of memories or traditions that involve reading with my son. We read every night and have since he was born, this week we read the story about the Elf on the Shelf. Do you have any books or stories that you remember hearing as a child that you hope to share as traditions? What story would you like to tell about the holiday season?
This blog is something that everyone should have something to say, at some point in your life, you didn't dislike reading. Tell us about a time that you enjoyed reading or having someone read to you. What was your favorite book and hwat made you like it? Was it the illiustrations, the story, the characters?
Missing being in my classroom the past few weeks; know that my students are doing their best to improve their reading and their thinking about their reading. Time for them to step up to the plate!!!! What reading strategy helps you the most when you struggle with your academic (school) reading??
I know that some of you will never believe it could be true, some of you couldn't care less. Could you sum up your life in six words? Think about it for awhile, You might even want to write it and edit your six words.
Wondering if all of my students know how valuable their public library really is or could be in their lives. I went online sometime last week and just reserved a bunch of books that I have been waiting to read. My tiny local library in Richmond, http://www.lwmlibrary.net/ is a member of a consortium that shares resources throughout Macomb County. Although none of the books were at my local branch, I started to receive emails on Tuesday and then all week long, that my books were in at my local branch. I picked them up on Saturday and cannot wait to get started reading. Do you know that you can also check out books from any library in the state if you go
If you ever took a moment to consider why a person reads I am sure that you could come up with hundreds of reasons. Equal to the number of reasons for reading is the number of reasons that being able to read is important. One of the most important steps you must take in order to be able to read.... is to do it!!!! Read, Read and then read some more. What do you do to insure that you have time for reading?
Can't believe that we already are through with our first week. It seemed each day brought new challenges, but thrilled with my students and the fantastic thinking going on in my classes. I hope that the students are just as curious in week two as they were in week one. Our class discussion about 9/11 and the movies proved to be so challenging for me and some of the students. It is hard for many of them because although they may not have lost someone in the events of that day many have lost others in their lives. It is a simple and complex connection all at the same time. In week two I hope to make my student
