Many teachers are having students participate in different types of independent reading activities from English classes to silent reading in advisory. Research shows that students that perform the best on testing are students that report doing the most independent reading, books of choice. What do you think that students can learn from all of this reading? What makes you say that?

I think reading helps kids learn by improving their vocabulary, because if they don't know a word they can easily look it up, or ask someome what it means.

Do you ever just skip a word and keep reading? Lots of times when you are reading a novel you can figure it out later based on the other text!

I used to read a lot, and now i dont as much because i so busy and my reading scores have gone down because of it. i think you need to read a book on a daily basis to keep up your reading score and also to get better at your reading. Also you will start to speak a whole new advanced vocabulary.

Because you might see a word you dont recognize & if you read back or ahead of it you can figure out the meaning.

I think Reading itself help kids read, because practice makes perfect. It could help them learn new things that the book is telling them (i.e. textbooks), it can increase their vocabulary, and possibly make them want to read more!

Independent reading can help you in a way that a teacher can't. Sometimes reading on your own helps you to see where you need more improvement and also where your strengths are. I would encourage students to do independent reading.

Books help you with strategies, but i think computers have more extra support than books. vocabulary for example, if we don't know it, and dictionary don't explain everything what the word talking about, then we need google to find some more pieces.

David that is good thinking! If you google the word then maybe is it the images that help you to understand? Or the verbal cues or context clues from the words around it?

Jalen, maybe you should be "Some guy" maybe we could work together to find a new way or modify a way that exists for current books/text and make it work for digital text.

Independent reading can help students develop a better vocabulary and strengthen their reading level. It could also help us understand the reading better in someways a teacher can't.
