Many of my students are freshman ready to embark on their new school experience. I wonder what their misconceptions about high school are and if they could write their own story for how the day would go, what would happen, I know that every school is as different as each student makes it. I remember that I felt much smaller in high school than I remember and my biggest concerns were hoping that I didn't get lost and wondering why I felt like everyone was staring at me. I know that some of my sophomores and juniors are happy to tell the freshman what to expect. What has your experience been?
On a recent Sunday drive through a quite northern Michigan town, I noticed the complete emptiness of the neighborhood and the main street. A once thriving community has been turned into a scattered few occupied homes and businesses, more empty than full. I wonder what stories those building hold, you know "if these walls could talk..." and I wonder who will be the first toi t
As the summer vacation season really gets into full swing, I have started to compile quite a list of must read books before the next school year. I wonder what my students are reading and know that they understand how important it is to keep those reading muscles strong!!
What other languages are you familiar with? Do you speak another language or do others in your family? Other countries requires their students to learn at least two languages in all grades. Their children are all bilingual with their secondary language usually being English. What are your opinions about learning another language? Do you think that it would be difficult to learn a language if you cannot read it, but only hear it and have quick conversations? What is your strength with English, is it writing, reading or speaking? Do you think that might be the same for other languages and why?
Many times when we are in the middle of a lesson, I find that every student has something that they just have to say. I often wonder how many days in a row we could spend with all students just sharing their opinion about the world around them. My students have opinions about the way that things should be, about the way that they should be treated and the way that others should act. I am quite sure that their opinion does not always match that of their parents or even their peers. This blog post is simply to allow my students to give an opinion about something that they cannot live without getting off of their chest.
Movies have become a large part of our lives and their influence often reaches well beyond the norm. Think about movies that you have seen that you would never read about.
I truly enjoy watching comedy films the best. However, I rarely read comedy; it is usually some type of suspense, mystery or fantasy.Ii especially like to read political or other crime noveks. Being that all movies start as written word either screen play or novel, what types of movies do you like to see? What makes them interesting to you? What types of images stick the most in your head or have the most impact on the film? What could you read that might be similar? Looking at all the standardized testing results the last week has been exhausting and enlightening. I am trying to decide how my students feel about it. Are you nervous about the upcoming test? Do you prepare for the test and how? While administering I noticed lots of small details about my students that I wouldn't have otherwised realized. One student even brought in his "lucky pencils" pretty awesome! Athletes, maybe you could transfer your game day rituals to the test day. Have you ever heard of those- like hockey players that don't shave during the playoffs or pitchers with lucky socks.
What games are you currently playng online? Have you seen any word games that are being played either online or as an APP? How about Words with Friends, Ruzzle or MADLIBS or FOur PICS One word or What's the Word? Tell me what strategies you use to solve these word puzzles. Do you play them with friends? Do you use an online word tool or dictionary? I have been a life-saver the last few days with Four Pics- tell me about your most challenging one so far.
Changing is not something that many people like; we get used to it. Or we deal with it, but I know that I prefer consistency. I like it when things are the same, maybe that is just because it is something tha tI can control. I like that every Monday I get to go to McDonalds and I don't have to cook. My son and I have created this tradition and I enjoy the break from cooking. What are some things tradtional or not that you like to stay the same? What are some things that you like to be different? Can you think of a kind of book that you liked to read when you were little? Have you tried to go back to that kind of book or that book? Tell me about it!
